Share Your Science: Blogging for Magazines, Newspapers and More

An Online Course Presented by Scientific American and the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, with Support from the Kavli Foundation

Expert voices are needed more than ever in conversations of national and global import—whether they’re about the inherent charm and fascination of the natural world or about creating sound, scientifically informed public policy.

To help more scientists to share their expertise with the public, the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, Scientific American and the Kavli Foundation are launching an online course on blogging and op-ed writing for magazines, newspapers and other news outlets. 

The 10-week course includes live, interactive, and web-based instruction, as well as feedback on writing assignments by Alda Center instructors and Scientific American editors. Successful assignments will be considered for publication on Scientific American's guest blog. The program will culminate with a special gathering in New York City in Fall 2018, where course participants will network with instructors, science communication experts and peers as well as staff from the Alda Center, Scientific American, and the Kavli Foundation.

The course is open to scientists at the post-doc level and higher (no graduate students) and will likely require 5-10 hours per week of commitment. Only 12 scientists will be accepted for each session, beginning Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 (dates TBA). There is no cost to participate, as the course is sponsored by the Kavli Foundation. No educational credit will be given for completion. Applications will be accepted from June 26, 2017 through July 31, 2017.
